Increasing numbers of women journeyed into space throughout the 1990s, including Helen Sharman (the first British astronaut), Kalpana Chawla (the first Indian-born woman in space), Mae Jemison (the first African-American woman in space) and Eileen Collins (the first female Space Shuttle commander). 30 female astronauts/cosmonauts flew a total of 64 missions in this decade.
