Sally Ride becomes the first American woman in space. Ride joined NASA in 1978 after studying physics at Stanford University, and went into space twice and worked for NASA until 1987….


The 1980s

After the disappointments of the 1960s and 1970s, the 1980s saw eleven women travel into space. The Challenger disaster of 1986 was a setback for the space programme, but women continued to make progress. Russian Svetlana Savitskaya became the first woman to complete a spacewalk in 1982, and American Anna Lee Fisher became the first mother in space.
